Working with Families in Therapy
Everyone is profoundly impacted by transition, crisis or by another family member’s extreme behavior, moods or needs. That’s why including families in therapy solutions benefits everyone. Families are interconnected and interdependent, so patterns develop as one person’s behavior is caused by, and causes other members behaviors in predictable ways.
In family therapy, we work together altering interactions to stop negative patterns such as acting out, excessive attention seeking, and power struggles, while improving problem-solving, communication, and relationships, to rebuild a healthy family system with better balance, stability, support and enjoyment.
Family therapy involves any number of family members. Sometimes it is helpful to meet with a parent and child, or just children together, or with the entire family. The therapist facilitates activities and discussions, with the family’s input, and helps to shift the family dynamics so new tools and ways of coping can be taught and practiced.
